Joseph Komari - Stella Nostrum

If there’s anything that could be said for Joseph Komari’s Stella Nosturm, released on May 19th, 2019, is that it’s both emotionally honest and admirably expressive. Unfortunately, while the feeling often translates, the execution is extremely poor, marring the experience.

This can easily be observed on the opener, Forever Day, which progresses gorgeously. At one point its tremendous synth layering is matched by a perfectly fitting ensuite choir. Unfortunately, the vocals are often indiscernible, and poorly mixed in. This is the case throughout the majority of the album; most of the vocals sound more like talking than singing, and very rarely do they not sound muddy within the mix.

It’s an absolute pleasure to be halfway through a song, and hear it detour into a chaotic drum and bass finale, or a carnival ride like Form. One doesn’t need to single out tracks, since most of the album follows the same winning formula. Even stripped back tracks, such as Tunnel, are heightened by a marvellous accompanying soundscape.

Stella Nostrum is a great album, poorly performed. Had the producer been more proficient, this may have come with a tremendous recommendation. The compositions are fire; both expressive, innovative, and well-developed. Sadly, it can’t help sound like it was made in a bedroom, and that “bedroom” aesthetic adds nothing to the pieces. My opinion is torn on this record, but for what it’s worth, there’s some brilliance to it.
