The Artificial Pine – K. J.

The Artificial Pine, previously known as Epiglottis, is an ambient producer from Kraków, Poland. Following the incredibly admirable and ambitious Saturnine Firmament, Pine has to further bloat his discography with more meaningless air.

While the album does have some highlights, such as the beautifully orchestrated and constructed That I'm Sending This To You So Late At Night, much of the compositions on K. J. are imitations of the great works of the past. There’s very little here to differentiate from the static drones and poster-modernist muzak’s of Eno, Budd and Glass. That’s not to say the emotion isn’t genuine; its apparent Pine is channelling true emotion throughout the suites; sonically, they just don’t have anything interesting to say.

In its defence, K. J. is somewhat of a delightful listen, it’s just unfortunately non-memorable. Perhaps if Pine was more concerned with challenging himself composition-wise, as opposed to expanding his already bloated discography, he’d stand out more. As such, it’s hard to give credit to an artist whose tracks sound like they were made in a sitting.
