Adam J. Burt - Cure for Blah Blah Life

Adam J. Burt is an experimental bedroom-pop producer from California, USA. His works are funny, eccentric, and delightful in nature. While is lyricism is often childish, his childlike wonder is the perfect match for his zany instrumentation and ludicrous progression.

Communication is the ultimate representation of Burt’s work; the Zappa-esque vocals are the perfect companion to Burt’s ridiculous lyricism and off-beat instrumentation. It’s the ideal balance between catchy-pop and nonsensical, whimsical musical progression. American Utopia and Ask Me explore abrasive frequencies with ease and delight; their Freudian decay into madness may be short and restraint, though they’re pleasurable nonetheless. Moreover, the trippier Burt allows his tracks to become, such as during American Utopia, County Fair and Summertime in Irvine, the more enjoyable his work becomes.

Unfortunately, many tracks are undeveloped and would have had more impactful if they were longer. At times, the pop-conventions are lazy and unnecessarily drag the song out, such as during Grocery Store Funk and Space Lizard. As a result, the album is rather uneven in its quality of tracks. If Burt decides to release straight bedroom-pop in future, he will need more than eccentric instrumentation to stand out; the compositions are desperately in need of refinement and expansion.

When Burt decides to break the conventions and express his inner eccentric personality, the album is quite delightful. Sadly, there’s too much filler; tracks such as Communication and Summertime in Irvine are great, but too much of the album tries to be accessible in lieu of being expressive. It’s a rough output, though there’s plenty of charm and uniqueness to recommend a listen.
