Simon Cameron Fletcher – Dream Sequence

Bad

Simon Cameron Fletcher is a solo indie-folk composer from Toronto, Ontario. His works are depressing, minimalistic suites in the vein of Elliot Smith. While Fletcher’s original works made waves in the underground scene due to his heartfelt deliveries and catchy chords, Dream Sequence solidified the artist as a one-trick pony.

The album is overlong, and tedious compared to Fletcher’s previous body of work. The exceptions stand strongly on their own; Mellow experiments with its dynamics, both instrumentally and vocally, to a strong emotional effect. 1,000’s stark strums leave quite an impression. Furthermore, Down demonstrates Fletcher is perfectly capable of delivering longer song structures, though it sounds like any one of his other songs needlessly dragged out. The remaining tracklisitng is tone-deaf and compositionally painstakingly straightforward. While none of the songs are particularly bad, the tracklisting itself is difficult to get through due to the repetitive nature of Fletcher’s songwriting and his limited range. Furthermore, they are sonically indistinct, and difficult to differentiate.

While Fletcher’s barebone instrumentation and simple delivery enhanced Give EP, on Dream Sequence it’s tiring and boring. Perhaps it’s because the album is unnecessarily drawn out, or the album’s aesthetics second time round are not strong enough to save it. If lyrics are the most important element of music to you, it may be worth a listen for the cold, stark poems alone, though sonically Dream Sequence would have more appropriately been titled Snooze Sequence.
