Simon Cameron Fletcher – A Promise

Simon Cameron Fletcher is a solo indie-folk composer from Toronto, Ontario. His works are depressing, minimalistic suites in the vein of Elliot Smith. In my original review of Give EP, I mentioned how I wished Fletcher’s work would be much longer. Unfortunately on A Promise, Fletcher has demonstrated that he lacks the range necessary for a full release.

Fortunately, A Promise does boast some strong tracks. Why ranks among Fletcher’s best, due to its soulful vocal delivery and soothing aesthetic. Never Fall in Love joins the ranks, due to its heartbreaking delivery and emotionally exhaustive atmosphere. Lastly, Sunshine is admirably expressive and honest, though the instrumentation is nothing to boast about. Like many songs on the album, it’s Fletcher’s voice over a few simple chords, repeated until oblivion. Songs like Crummy World, Watermelon Gum and Here Right Now work for about a third of duration, until they repeat themselves uninterestingly to disappointment. Minimalism can only go so far if the compositions are lacklustre.

It’s apparent Simon Cameron Fletcher wants to be the next Elliot Smith, though he has nothing to offer over his greatest influence. While Fletcher does boast an authentic voice, and his work is emotionally honest, it’s missing the romanticism and refinement Smith so perfectly crafted. If only Fletcher was more concerned with improving the original sound, as opposed to replicating it; though this may be too much to ask of someone who can barely differentiate his own songs.
