Mollywhollop - It's All Good Man
Mollywhollop is a solo math-rock instrumentalist from California, USA. His latest work, It's All Good Man, is not only his longest, but his best. Perhaps the most impressive instrumentalist in the community, Mollywhollop has outdone himself.
The guitar playing is incredibly swift and spacious during the opening, Ok I’m Ready. Similar to his debut EPs’, Molly elegantly allures one into his vivid imagination by gently expanding upon his soundscapes. Unlike tracks further down the tracklisting, though, the opener’s riffs are rather repetitive. Thankfully the guitar playing is more articulate and creative throughout the following song, Stone Stories. The album increases with quality with each proceeding track, such as the magnificent No Longer a Prisoner of Consciousness and the charming interconnected flow onward to the outro of My Bed of Embers. Mollywhollop’s saxophone charms and glides through much of the tracklisting, adding much needed colour to his suite. The album cover meticulously reflects the work on stream; rich and clean. Sadly, much like the opener, the closer doesn’t do enough to stand out, and feels like far-too familiar ground.
It’s All Good Man is a step in the right direction for Mollywhollop; though the artist should be careful not to retread this territory in future. The guitar playing is undeniably exceptional, though it’s missing a more memorable soundscape, in line with De Blimp’s majestic Beautiful Liquid. As a result, it often sounds too much like lounge muzak). It has enough identity to separate it from contending modern math rocks suits, such as Tera Melos, though it’s going to need a lot more to compete with other genres on the scene. A stronger layer of paint would push Mollywhollop’s work to new grounds. Nevertheless, his latest work is very commendable and should be heard by everyone. Hopefully Mollywhollop’s strong songwriting will inspire other musicians to be as creative.
