MASTER BOOT RECORD – Internet Protocol

MASTER BOOT RECORD is a classical symphonic music producer from Rome, Italy. Blending the realms of melodic black metal and chip-tuned cyberpunky dark synths, MASTER BOOT RECORD is a pioneer in his own wild style. His album, INTERNET PROTOCOL, does an excellent job at displaying his talents.

Whether it’s during the cathartic murderous builds up of FTP, the equally satisfying crescendos of HTTP, or the head-banding closer SMTP; INTERNET PROTOCOL, is consistently loud and marvellously paced. Master Boot Record takes a somewhat repetitive and tacky internet-bred synthetic, and makes it kick hard amidst the hard-pounding drums of IRC. When listening to the album for the first time, you could pick any song at random and it would be equal in quality. Unfortunately, The album tends to rely too much from prog-rock, as the chord progressions cannot help sounding straight from a generic death metal suites - though the avant-garde chiptunes do a great job at captivating the listener. While much of the synthetic additions are a gimmick, they kick ass. The fresh layer of paint gives much needed life into the metal foundation; too bad it cannot escape its tropes.

Despite how heavy sounding and satisfying much of the instrumentation is, it can’t help but feel “safe.” This is perhaps due to the lack of grit, basic riffs, or repetitive nature of the tracks. The production is top-notch, as is the execution of instrumentation; one can only hope MASTER BOOT RECORD get a little more inventive and creative with their song-writing in future. Nevertheless, the aesthetic alone is sufficient enough to recommend any fan of metal to it.
