Asserter - Creeper

Asserter is a fourth world producer from Louisville, Kentucky. His works blur the lines between ambient, noise, drone, and metaphysical explorations. Following a disappointing streak of small EP’s, Asserter reaffirmed his status as one of the underground scene’s greatest composers on Creeper, a discernible effort which explores darker soundscapes in line with Infigurable, though in a more varied and far more creative approach.

Suburb lures the listener in with its simple, yet creative amalgamation of bleeps & bloops, accompanied by a fascinating crescendo of noise. Walls of muffled synthetic cries breathe plenty of life into Hardline Faily, Asserter’s magnum opus. While the song lacks a distinct pattern or melody, its progression through dissonance is as jaw-dropping as it is frightening. Much could be said about the title track Creeper, which focuses on higher frequencies, diabolic bells, and equally demented harsh textural work. A muffled vocal interweaves throughout the second half like a cry for help, perfectly accentuated the mesmerising detailed soundscape. The closer, Bee Workshop, is far more streamlined that its preceeding tracks. The track could have easily fit onto Asserter’s previous release, though it would have stood out more from other tracks on Infigurable, due to its captivating, slowly decaying soundscape. The second half of the song completely redeems the repetitive first half. Thankfully, it seems Asserter is becoming aware of his video game-esque filler, as the bonus track, What’s Voidpunk?, was cut from the album.

Creeper only falls short of a recommendation to Float Primes due to its disappointing length. In fact, at its peak, its Asserter’s best work to date. One can only hope the shorter-but-more-frequent releases are not a trend for Asserter moving forward, as his sombre era of digital manipulation demands more time be put into expanding upon and refining his releases. His next album will unfortunately now have to compete with Creeper, though there’s little doubt it will be any lesser quality – Asserter is on a creative high. His next release can’t come soon enough. Highly recommended.
