Beige Monk - a recalling of a dream in which i became enslaved by the game show host gods D~AD and grandpatriarch slithurge

Atmospheric. Emotional. Divine. A recalling of a dream… is a gorgeous assortment of twirling guitars, dazzling arps and soft-spoken ballads. The album was released on May 17, 2019 by Beige Monk, an artist from New Jersey. Blending neo-psychedelia, art and dream pop, the album creatively manages to differentiate itself from the competition via its unique vocal delivery and creative songwriting.

They may be timid, yet Monk’s vocals sit delightfully in the mix. This is partly to do with the miraculous use of space throughout; the dream-pop elements are consistently alluring, despite being rather standard. What’s less impressive are the cheesy pop sections, such as the mid-way point through the eponymous dream AKA follow me. Thankfully, the album doesn’t rely on moments such as these often, and instead focuses more on its glorious soundscapes. To the artist’s credit, the poppier sections sometimes work, such as during the Animal Collective-inspired nightlife and the reggae a solar anus; it just doesn’t sound as unique as the rest of the record.

A recalling of a dream… is the album Simon Cameron Fletcher should strive to make. For starters, it’s creative. During its experimental sections, it’s unique and unlike much else in the scene. When the album is subdued, it’s marvellously expressive. When it’s over, you want to listen to it again. It’s not entirely consistent, but during its highs, it’s wonderful. Worth a listen through at least once.
