Tennis champ – lucky dip

Tennis Champ, “an angry little man with a sampler,’ makes retro-upbeat feel-good-core summer beats, despite what his Bandcamp description says. Very reminiscent of Neon Indian, Tennis Champ mostly soars due to his underdog aesthetic and simple-yet-catchy compositions. His EP, Lucky Dip, is unfortunately quite sterile and devoid of ideas.

While Ruckus, Guts and Rubber Band Man all have a really good vibe, they are complimented poorly by a large array of filler. So Sick Of People Being Mad At Me experiments with its composition the most, and is the biggest standout. Chicken Noodle Soup is heavily reliant on its beats and repetitive synthetic work, while offering very little of substance. 4pm is charming, but too simple. The same could be said about Key Ur Own Car, which only works due to its goofiness. On the plus side, the sampling throughout the EP is is charming, such as during Glutton, and adds a lot of personality to the EP. The range of styles is also quite admirable, such as Interlude 122bpm which is a really nice and strangely fitting track. Sadly, the final 5 tracks are incredibly disappointing, and dramatically lessen the quality of the album.

Aside from the charming personality, the album doesn’t have much to say. Tennis Champ’s palate is rather extensive, but his songwriting is severely lacking. These suits feel more like abandoned experiments than fully fletched ideas; moreover, the quality control is severely lacking. Here’s hoping Tennis Champ will expand upon his discography in future in a more meaningful way.
