Doid – Behind Closed Eyes
Doid is an expimental psychedelic rock band from the UK. Not much is known about the artist, aside from his modest, extensive discography. While Doid only focuses on one genre/style of music, he executes it extraordinarily well on Behind Closed Eyes.
The opener, Flaming, is a jammy and exceptionally well produced lengthy suite. The song sounds like Slint’s take on psychedelic rock, beautifully balancing its heavier moments with sombre sections. Curtain call is only dragged down by a formulaic vocal delivery, but the instrumentation is gorgeous. Moreover, the vocal performance it fails to differentiate itself from soft-core acts such as Muse. The album works best when the vocals are not in the way, such as during the lustrous opening instrumental The Pendulum Swing. While stylistically Private Beauty doesn’t differentiate itself from the competition, it encapsulates one in its warm soundscape. The song is smooth and elegant. Aging boasts one incredibly fine psychedelic soundscape. Caverns (Behind Closed Eyes) is another commendably lengthened song, though much of it is familiar grounds. Had the song only explored its masterful, ominous outro further. Relinquish is an exquisite closer that predictably adds keys, but does so in a worthily elegant manner, before devouring it within a wall of noise.
Doid’s Behind Closed Eyes falls into a category of music that often feels underrated; music that is crafted to such high quality and is incredibly imaginative, though stylistically fails to differentiate itself from its influences. While it’s certainly better than the majority of modern progressive psychedelic rock bands, it doesn’t do enough differently to recommend it over the great acts of the past. Regardless, the emotion is so pure and expressive it’d be a shame for it to be buried within the canon of rock music. The album exceeds with repeated listens and comes with a very high recommendation. Here’s hoping Doid will find an element to differentiate themselves with in future.
