ghOsty - Dream:i/o

GhOsty is an experimental underground IDM/Deep house producer from Midland, South Dakota. Released November 10, 2021st, Dream:i/o was an impressive addition to the artist’s catalogue.

Since there’s only two grand suites, it’s difficult to break down the album track-by-track. To do so is unnecessary, however, as the album is essentially a stream of electronic consciousness. Miraculously, there’s plenty of thought to Dream:i/o’s arrangements. The album’s most notable feature is its variation; it seamlessly blends ambient with more percussive-based sections, even dabbling in techno occasionally. Furthermore, the progression is admirable; despite being repetitious, it hardly outstays its welcome. This is thanks mostly to the gorgeous, absorbing sound design. Most impressive are the experimental dnb sections, which are as intriguing as they are playful. They may not be groundbreaking, but they boast enough personality to make them standout.

There are small inconsistencies that drag the experience down, however. The vocal sample use is inconsistent, though, often copying Impossible Nothing’s phenomenal sampling without the fresh beats. Sadly, the vocals don’t translate to the less structured, ambient-led synthetic soundscape. Acoustic instrumentation does, however, adding much need variance to the ghastly setting. Secondly, the mixing throughout, especially in the techno sections, is underwhelming; the light trances do not pop as clearly as they should, resulting in a lackluster section. Considering the album’s overall goal, however, this is hardly a hindrance to the overall experience.

The only real complaint one could give Dream:i/o is that there isn’t enough new ideas to warrant its length. While enjoyable, it leaves one wanting more by its ending. Nonetheless, I expect more good things to come from ghOsty based on this album.
