Empty Angels – Augmented Reality For Ugly Lovers

Had anyone asked me what genre I expected going into Augmented Reality For Ugly Lovers, I would have been unable to guess, as everything by Empty Angels I have heard prior had been vastly varied. Their debut EP is no exception to this anticipation, for Augmented Reality For Ugly Lovers is creatively varied.

I Don’t Have to Say Much is the clear standout, joyfully blending indie rock with electronic indie pop. The range throughout the album is quite impressive, such as during the creative Your Horror Still Wants Me. Even when it sounds a little amateurish, it’s quite admiring. Navelgazer ends the album creatively safe, yet undeniably enjoyably.

The EP unfortunately suffers when it overly relies on pop conventions, such as during So Faded. While the song’s vibe is consistently cruisy, and its vocals blissfully well executed, it cannot help like its restricted by its radio-friendly approach. The is aside from the last minute, of course; an exceptionally well placed jazz composition… if only it were longer. Another example can be observed during Your Horror Still Wants Me - it certainly would have benefited greatly from a less conventional follow-up to its prog-rock mid-climax. The album rarely takes a risk in its structure.

Thankfully, the highs are engaging enough to recommend the album as a whole. Empty Angels certainly have a lot skill, and quite a lot of passion to suite. Augmented Reality For Ugly Lovers’ only constraint is the proficiency of its producers at the time, it just doesn’t match the style of the over-the-top music. Nevertheless, it’s well paced and respectfully playful. It paves the road to an exciting and highly anticipated full-length debut.
