Darkmatternebula - Bleak
Darkmatternebula is an artist who, in his own words, makes omniscient and omniviolent industrial sludge. His work is among the best on 4chan, and any regular will already be familiar with his work.
The album opens with Grain, a sick demented introduction into Darkmatternebula’s industrial vision. The beats are uncanny, and the vibe is grimy; it’s a solid first track that only gives a glimpse of neb’s brilliance. If Grain were the first step, Cavity is the plunge straight into the abyss. Industrial noise borderline a satanic nightmare, alluringly captivating the listener. Disconnected beats bar the listener within. Pit is a gentle, warm delight amidst the insanity. It elegantly retains its industrial influence while border-lining the sublime antithesis. Neb begins to break from the Amon Tobin framework in Sole, only loosely relying on its percussion. The progression here is natural and delightful, furthering unravelling layers that are intricately buried within. Moreover, when Neb ditches the conventional beats, he shines the most. While Sole may go on for a bit too long, the energy picks up with Phobos; a quick, demented relapse before the hell that ensues. Untied carries the tradition of the horror-esque industrial grime-core with riveting, complex synths. His work is the electronic version of Diamanda Galas’s complex vocal liturgies. Untied’s progression is so harrowing and captivating until the last minute, where it somewhat fizzles out. Distort/Sicken most certainly makes up for it though, with its insane distorted and extremely frenzied vibe. It’s a solid ending to the LP.
While Bleak doesn’t cover too much new ground, and relies heavily on its influences, its sharp length and beautiful production provide an excellent listening experience and a sublime atmosphere. I admire Neb’s ability to break song structures. If this LP is a taste of what’s to come, I’m overly confident he’ll one day release a masterpiece.
