Kevin and the Bikes – Ironic Songs

Following the widely successful and immensely satisfying Dorkcore 101, Kevin and the Bikes followed their ambitious 4-hour monolithic record with a rather average run-of-the-mill indie record. Gone are the nonsensical compositions and eclectic instrumentation; Ironic Songs may contain some of the raw energy of their previous efforts, but none of the originality.

It does have its moments, though. Party Hard truly achieves its title. My Marrow is one of Kevin and the Bike’s greatest and deserves to be heard by any indie-rock goer. One Night To Make You Wish is rather filler-esque, but flows nicely into the psychedelically gracious Turbulence. Lastly, while Salamia starts rather generically, is progresses into an impressive rock opera suit, with elements of noise woven in. The standouts on Ironic Songs are truly impressive.

Sadly, the remaining songs are rather generic. While some of the filler isn’t necessarily bad, such as I Fucked Up, it barely differentiates itself from the canon of indie garage rock. Overall, the band still have great chemistry and rock a consistent vibe, and the production here is noticeably fitting (especially the charming sound of the snares throughout), yet it’s lacking the heart and innovation of their previous efforts. Here’s hoping the next album by Kevin and the Bikes won’t simply be devised in order to keep the band relevant – they’re better off taking the time to flesh out something grander.
