For Lunar Dust - Rites of Passage

Rites of Passage is a labour of love and demonstrates that while the underground scene may not innovate much, it can still harbour unique experiences. Released on May 10th, 2021, its music was timeless.

The album is filled to the brim with memorable moments. The light bird chirps and telephone rings on Wall Of Wings, the gorgeous room ambience on Cursed Fae (Nettle Cults) and he fuzz throughout junkyards and playgrounds are all memorable. The tape-loop transitions between each track are also a unique touch. One can easily heard the Caretaker influences, though the album takes its own due unique, charming direction. Corresponding melodies are merely a backdrop, and not the focus, leading to a unique, satisfying record. The only real complain comes in line with the compositions. It’s not that they’re short, but usually only hold one idea. Moreover, they begin to sound the same after a while.

Rites of Passage is an excellent fusion of chill-wave guitars and home-recorded foley. One can only hope there’s more experimentation on the next record, or potentially a more innovative sound palate. Nonetheless, it scratches the itch.
