Wagon Lord - Fun Nursery Rhymes for Children of High Intellect

Notorious online troll and prolific artist Wagon Lord has captivated the attention of many underground music enthusiasts for good reason; his music is unique, delightful, and well-spirited. While his earliest discography is undeveloped and borderline childish, his EP Fun Nursery Rhymes for Children of High Intellect stands out purely for its charm and solid foundation.

The first three tracks are short, yet enjoyable. Ducks Up is a fun way to start the album, Dukes Up enjoyably starts to experiment with Lord’s majestic muted trumpet, and Cakes Up is hilarious and reminds one this is not for children at all. Furthermore, the mild synthetic work is a nice bow on top. Egges Up shifts the dynamic of the album quite a bit. While the preceding tracks were random experiments, Egges takes time to carefully unravel its progression. While the lyricism is nothing to take seriously (a modern take on Humpty-Dumpty, no less), the instrumentation is still charming. Much of the chord progressions and lyrics would be heard later in Jove’s Cove; it wouldn’t be surprising if some of it was directly copy pasted over. Thankfully there are some original ideas intact that did not cross over, making the record worth a listen to for any fan.

While Fun Nursery Rhymes for Children of High Intellect is quite rough and undeveloped, it’s still more of Wagon Lord, which is a good thing. Hopefully following the release of Jove’s Cove, Wagon Lord will expand his discography in a meaningful way. Unfortunately, earlier releases do not offer enough quality. Nonetheless, out of his earlier catalogue, Fun Nursery Rhymes for Children of High Intellect is undeniably the best one.
