The Bread Scientists - Troposphere

The Bread Scientists, led by Jacob Paddison, is a hybrid electronic rock band from NSW, Australia. In 2021, Paddison stepped up his game by introducing elements of industrial metal and math rock into his hybrid dnb soundscapes.

!!! introduces many of these elements to the listener unexpected. The metal-dnb fusion truly begins on Red Planet, however, a turbulent song full of energy and stimulating riffs. Cosmonaut is exceptionally wild; the coarse guitar work is only accentuated by the space-rock thematics. The blending of electronica and alternative metal is most impressive on Black Sun Mirage; an overture of elegant synthetics and heavy guitar work. At times, the textural work and dnb feel like an afterthought to the overpowering guitars. Starburst contains gorgeous textural work that is barely audible among is omnipresent metal guitars. The glitchy hip-dop beats feel simply slapped on at the end of Slug. Thankfully, even when the electronic elements are hidden, the powerful guitar work makes up for it.

Unlike Amidst Radiances, Troposphere’s greatest flaw is its lack of identity. The compositions have thoroughly improved, and the guitar work is phenomenal, though in introducing metal to the palate, The Bread Scientists lost their original style, which was quite fascinating to begin with. If Paddison were somehow able to blend the styles of both albums together fluently, his output would be remarkable. On the Bandcamp page of Troposphere, it is written: “this is it, the bread scientists magnum opus - doubt ill ever be able to top this” Here’s hoping that isn’t the case, because The Bread Scientists are clearly capable of doing so much more. All it needs is more of their old electronic sound, and a little more refinement.
