S. Rabbit – Kick

S. Rabbit is an indie bedroom folk composer from Savannah, Georgia. While her voice may not be pitch perfect, S. Rabbit’s vocals are easily her greatest asset. They’re distinct, expressive, and perfectly suiting for her simple, yet lovely and animated instrumentals. The mixing can be awkward, such as the unnecessarily loud keys on the opener Said Echo, though they are exactly what one should expect from something honestly from the bedroom.

Everything has been enhanced on S. Rabbit’s latest release; the songwriting, the palate of instrumentation, and especially the wordplay have all vastly improved. While the interpretation of the lyrics are of little importance to me, as they should be to anyone listening to an album the first time round, they perfectly balance catchy melodic deliveries with personal meaning that’s both introspective, yet easy to follow and easy to sing along to. Moreover, there’s plenty of emotion throughout the entirety of Kick. Sadly, the album is always up-beat, though perhaps it’s an antidote to S. Rabbit’s personal troubles; either way, one can only hope S. Rabbit explores more varied soundscapes in future releases.

S. Rabbit is rapidly becoming this generation’s Lisa Germano. There’s plenty of room for improvement, though; the artist should be careful not to over-bloat her discography, and instead focus on delivering longer and more complex suites. While the songs are consistently strong throughout Kick, they stick to the same formula throughout, and thus lose their impact towards the end. As mentioned before, the artist should explore more experimental and varied genres, though for now, her latest release is as good as the artist will ever get within her limitations. It’s catchy, easy to listen to, and an easy recommendation to any fan of any genre.
