Quirkyer - Sacred Songs / Satan Songs

Cable Koble, who goes by the alias Quirkyer, is a lo-fi bedroom folk pop artist from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Posed as a collection of demos recorded between July 2020 and May 2021, Sacred Songs / Satan Songs may have had quite an impact had the tracks been properly mixed, mastered and delivered.

Sadly, the vocals are disappointing, and barely audible on tracks such as Everything is Going to Hell (Teen Suicide Cover) and Long Black Hair. The guitars are undeniably fine, though; the opening track For Katie is the only standout purely for the fact it’s baron of vocals. Ironically enough, even though the acoustic guitar constantly stumbles and is performed without precision, it enhances the free-spirited soundscape, much in line John Fahey’s hypnotic, improvised stream of consciousnesses. Yet sadly, Quirkyer constantly interrupts the mood with awkwardly placed vocals. Furthermore, the delivery on stereo varies constantly, so the end result can sound sloppy; though this is mostly to do with the inconsistent mixing, or lack thereof.

Despite its flaws, Sacred Songs / Satan Songs does an admirable job at displaying Kroble’s talents. The artist should spend far more time on his next output, though; a collection of demos, presumably recorded by a phone, is unacceptable in 2021. People are constantly competing for each other’s’ attention; underground artists should always be considerate of other peoples’ time. Sadly, there’s nothing in particular to recommend on Sacred Songs / Satan Songs as is.
