Limina- - Segreti Degli Artefici

Segreti Degli Artefici, released May 27th, 2022, is a delightful, yet uninventive new-age drone record. What it lacks in new ideas, it makes up for in soul.

The album immediately encapulsates the listener in a thick, mesmerising soundscape that is somehow both dark and gritty, while also light and vibrant. To the listeners surprise, it ends in a prog-rock climax that’s both fitting and disappointingly short. The variation throughout the proceeding tracks is stunning; Tunnel Dell'Ascesa is a sewer-esque drone piece littered with foliage. The mix of bells and glitch make for a mesmersing experience on the beautiful constructive and ever-progressing Rovine Della Foresta Di Pini. Arcani experiments with its synths to a dazzling effect. While all the tracks are executed with equal precision, not all moments impress. Santuario Dell'Acqua Abbandonata, for example, offers nothing aside from a sample of rain and light drones. Sometimes sections only work in the context of video game music or a soundtrack for D&D, as moments throughout the mid-section can be quite plain.

What Segreti Degli Artefici sets out to achieve, it does commendably well. The album is deeply absorbing, and the perfect length. Unlike the latest Eternal Returns record released this year, it doesn’t quite have an inventive enough palate to recommend over similar releases. It does, however, achieve what it sets out to do very well. As a result, Limina will stay close on my radar.
