St Joshua – In the Land of Wind and Ghosts

St Joshua is a singer-songwriter from Athens, GA. His EP, In the Land of Wind and Ghosts, is an extremely promising foray into St Joshua’s music career. It’s evident the artist has been playing the guitar for a long period of time prior to this release, as his music is masterfully elegant and beautifully strum.

Where it lacks in originality, In the Land of Wind and Ghosts certainly makes up for it in character and atmosphere. The serene plucking is consistently lush and full of warmth though St. Joshua’s 5-track EP, most notably during the opening title track. Summer in a College Town and a Sign of Passing continues the hazy, cool vibe in a glorious fashion. The focus on austereness and use of space is the perfect accompaniment to the singer-songwriter’s raw voice. Joshua’s minimalistic and mystical technique finely balances emotion and structure, spectacularly elating the joy of a rural and free lifestyle. The album ends with the gorgeous closer, Ghosts.

The only thing that drags In the Land of Wind and Ghosts down is its short length. The album is incredibly alluring and majestically captivating – it’s a shame it ends so abruptly. Moreover, the shortest songs feel more like experiments compared to the meaty opener and closer. If St Joshua can release a full-length album of similar quality, it’s sure to create bigger waves.
