Kyle John Kenowski – Attic

Kyle John Kenowski is an avid solo composer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His music blends classical music, psychedelia, folk-rock and pop. His EP Attic offers a more playful and cheerful approach compared to his emotionally exhausting works. The first few tracks of the album are magnificent and rank among his best, but sadly it fizzles out towards the end.

The opener, The Serpent is majestically captivating and alluringly creepy, impressively setting the mood for the EP. While they may be underwhelmingly short, Rain City and Longely Hike, Late at Night beautifully expand upon Kenowski’s weird and moody vision. Both tracks are pleasantly trippy, while retaining the introspective psychedelic marvel that makes Kenowski stand out as an artist. Unfortunately, the grand centrepiece of the album, Idle Worship, is rather disappointing. While it contains moments of brilliance, it tends to waffle-about with the plain and generic synth beat. Whereas Kenowski’s use of space was exceptional in his debut, here it sounds amateurish. Regardless, once the song builds enough momentum, it makes up for the disappointing first half. Furthermore, Stuck Strump is interesting enough for one to make it to the end.

In contrast to his earlier works, Attic is a notable bump in quality, both in production and execution. While it may not be Kenowski’s strongest songwriting fare, even in contrast to his debut, it excels in every other department. Unfortunately, the EP is very front loaded, but it’s worth an ear for any fan of Kenowski.
