Surri - Having Fun On The Computer EP

Surri’s latest album “Having Fun On The Computer EP,” released on November 5th, 2021, is an inconsistent, yet noteworthy effort.

Sadly, as much fun as the artist may have had composing these songs, it doesn’t translate well to the enjoyability factor. Quite a few sections, such as the entirety of the opener and Ruby Chamber Quest Tangent, are repetitive and dull. Thankfully, there are three standout tracks that are worthy of admission. Until My Eyes Bleed is super creative in its interjecting synths and wobbly framework. Secondly, The Emerald Sea (Narcissu Flip) mixes things up with its classy keys and orchestic synths. Lastly, Remember, though while technically a bonus track, is thoroughly enjoyable. The majestic soundscape is enhanced by an eastern synthetic influence; the result is charming. If only the album presented more tracks as such, as opposed to the filler it is almost entirely comprised of. Finally, while Credits adds a solid dynamic to the album, it’s baron of any fresh ideas.

Like most things in the underground scene, it lacks innovation, though it certainly makes up for it in composition. The album is mostly dragged down by a lackluster production; there’s very little dynamic, and the entire album sounds amateurishly mixed/mastered. Furthermore, it’s plainly obvious the album was made in a short duration of time; half the album is filler. A darn shame, since the highs are quite noteworthy. Here’s hoping the next project is more fleshed out.
