Latent Places – Mote

Bad

Latent Places is an experimental drone producer from Saint Louis, Missouri. Mote, released on May  22nd, 2020, was a tremendously bland debut from the artist.

Summer opens with gorgeous hums, but a boring progression and a perhaps too-cluttered soundscape. The excessive number of frogs and insects is more comical than absorbing. Lulls is far more impressive; while ideas are odd and excessively repeated, they come together magically to form a complex, fascinating soundscape. Sadly, the last two tracks are less than spectacular. Spaceships is merely muffled air for two minutes, and Vanishing Points barely expands upon it as it introduces keys into its “space” arena. Both tracks are uninspired and uneventful.

Mote has one standout track, and three tracks of wasted potential. Rather than recommend the album; I can only recommend you listen to Lulls. Those wanting more out of ambient are better off checking out Latent Places sophomore effort, Spirit Of.
