Wincing - A_workingpoor EP

Wincing are an alternative post-punk band from NSW, Australia. Taking in influences of grunge, post-rock, psychellic and new wave; their music is more than just an accumulation of styles; it’s wholly unique and thoroughly enjoyable.

Goddam is appropriately titled. The spatial arrangements are stupendously organised.  The progression of the track is masterful, condensing many ideas into its 3-minute track length. F’sure blends psychedelic riffs and experiments with jazzy drums. The result is a delightful affair. Furthermore, funk is tastefully implemented into the composition; rarely does such a venture not feel tacky and moreover it enhances the track. Miseryguts inc. is a more straightforward affair, though is still littered with fantastic sample-use and ferocious guitars. The EP may have benefited from its absence, nevertheless it’s still enjoyable. Bone Broken Baloo is a masterful ending to the album, utilising space effectively once again and splendidly introducing keys. Perhaps the best song on the album.

While it may feel much too short, A_workingpoor EP is jam-packed with innovative ideas and overflowing with personality. Wincing are not afraid to embrace their weirdness, which evidently makes them so remarkable. I hope in future they release an entire album with as much charm and quality – some of these tracks here are by far the best stuff I’ve heard on /mu/.

Really Good

Note: the original score was “great”. I still think it’s great, but it’s less than 10 minutes long. Hard to recommend over other more notable-albums in the same category.
