E.J. Edwards - cwtch

The description on cwtch by E.J. Edwards states the LP is a collection of acoustic songs written and recorded in the backroom of his mum's house in the valleys. The album is named after the backroom 'The Cwtch'. Despite not being a fully developed release, it’s quite enjoyable for what it is.

Cymrobeat opens the album with style. The most impressive elements are the energetic vocals and playful drums. Despite sounding lo-fi, the percussive elements sound sharp admirably in the mix. Furthermore, the progression is strong. Waiting to be seen is a delightful mix of serenade guitars, mischievous drum patterns and light-hearted vocals. The track, as well as the artist, is very reminiscent of White Flight. Hey Whisper is even more lively, while maintaining a sense of sincerity. Some other time reuses the same elements as preceding tracks, yet its composition is distinct and memorable. Lastly, the closer Don’t Tell Me, is easily the most conventional track on the album. While its composition is conventional, its energy is still admirable. Forgettable, but enjoyable.

E.J. Edwards is an incredibly talented artist and has instantly earned a high place on the Deko.fm radar. His energy, as well as his proficiency, makes standard alternative rock fun and absorbing. A rare feat in the current decade. Indie rockers take note; solid compositions can make even the most benign genres engaging.
