SLVTDEATH - Drowning in Darkness

Bad

SLVTDEATH is an underground artist who’s been releasing experimental instrumental hip-hop for close to a decade. Incorporating elements of punk, new-wave, industrial and noise, the artist barely uses these fringe genres to enhance his music, as the majority of tracks are centred around a tired, repetitive instrumental beat.

Drowning in Darkness is the post-punk’s equivalent of a typical Soundcloud artist giving away their beats for free. The applied genres and aesthetic to SLVTDEATH’s work have been explored to death prior this release; there’s very little reason to care about what’s on display here. To its credit, some of the tracks are quite charming; Gloom & Doom is a rare chip-tune song that works thanks to its bold soundscape, the hypnotic arps of Repose give it plenty of life, and the delirious soundscape of Neurosis is perhaps the greatest element of the album. Unfortunately, as the album progresses towards the end, tracks such as Thousand Yard Stare and Trapped Inside are so tedious they drag the entire experience down.

It’s evident by SLVTDEATH’s Bandcamp page that the artist cares about his craft. While not wholly original, the artist’s display of a paper bag over his head is as charming as it is adventurous. Moreover, it suits the music afoot. Sadly, the artist has little quality control in his catalogue, with Drowning in Darkness being his eight release so far this year. If only SLVTDEATH had a proper, refined vision; with more attention to the track-listing, more refinement, and potentially some vocals, this could have been a solid project. Unfortunately, in its current state, its unlikely to amuse anyone who’s listened to music before.
