JinxNewWorld84 - SPOTTING PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELONG

SPOTTING PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELONG, released by JinxNewWorld84, is an enjoyable sample-based vapourwave album that manages to cultivate its own personality despite relying on the laziest, most benign genres. Released on October 14th, 2021, the album was a pleasant delight, relaying schizophrenia and glitchcore in a charming manner.

While the tracklisting was inconsistent, there was one amazing standout track. Ford F350000 soared far higher than everything else on the record. The progression of the track was as admirable as the amazing blend of glitch, noise track and hyperpop. Had 100 Gecs released the track, it’d easily be a fan favourite. VICTORY BREAKFAST, despite being a short filler track, is surprisingly quite flaunt. The longest tracks are easily the best, as they are the most developed. INNER PARTY PART I, II, 3, IV, V, VI is fabulous, for instance; its swirling soundscape sounds like a natural progression to cLOUDDEAD’s hazy soundscapes. The beatboxing segment at the end of the song should have seriously been expanded upon. What was most surprising was the closer, JULIA & THE CHESTNUT TREE; boasting a beautiful, orchestic soundscape. Most of the tracks less than two minutes long were not as enjoyable, though, such as the trepid DOUBLETHINK and TELESCREEN Feelies.

The weakest elements were easily the vocals. Edited to the point that the vocalist was indistinguishable from similar artists eliciting the same techniques, the vocals left a lot to be desired. Thankfully the flow was sufficient; one would struggle to identify the artist on the radio, though. Aside from strengthening the compositions; the artist ought to cultivate a more distinct personality with future releases.

SPOTTING PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELONG is a solid album, made by a competent sound designer. Sadly, it’s evident the producer hasn’t heard anything outside what’s trendy in 2021. Moreover, perhaps a limitation of the genre, but most tracks are undeveloped and lack a strong hook/lead. There are moments of brilliance, however; a sign that good things may be around the corner. The album also flows exceptionally well from start to finish, despite its lesser moments. Despite all its flaws, it’s also very enjoyable. Its recommendation comes with a caveat; if you’re not a fan of the genres mentioned, it won’t sway you otherwise.
