Surri - What I Want To Say

Surri is an experimental breakcore dreampop artist from Portland, Oregon. While his debut What I Want to Say is impeccably well produced and offers an extensive range of ideas, the execution is far too formulaic and overlong to recommend.

The album does have its strengths, however, such as its interesting variation in palate. Most songs have an interesting idea or hook to lure the listener in, though the execution is often shallow and repetitive. While some of these ideas may have worked for a short duration, almost all of them exceed their welcome. Starlit’s presence on the album is one of the only elements alleviating the album from mediocrity. While they can’t save the otherwise boring Enough, the shifting soundscapes of Fox are as delightful as its breakbeat elements are progressive; the later song being one of the only true highlights of the album. Lastly, most songs rely far too heavily on their sample use to stand out, a gimmick that quickly becomes stale and overdone as the album progresses.

What I Want to Say undeniably displays quite an admirable producer, though a limited composer. If the beats didn’t feel like they were copy pasted throughout the entire album, it could have easily gauged a higher rating. Sadly, the compositions lack much thought. The aesthetic is quite impressive though; one of the main draws of the album is its magnificent, hazy atmosphere. Here’s hoping Surri can make something more meaningful with his aesthetic in future.
