Christian & The Hedgehog Boys: Christian & The Hedgehog Boys

When reviewing a controversial artist, it’s incredibly important to differentiate the art from the artist.

Chris Chan is a controversial artist; some would consider him a modern Daniel Johnson, while others perceive him as a talentless hack riding off the fame of his comic books and polluting another avenue of entertainment. Chan is clearly the former; an underrated, unrecognized pioneer of pseudo-Freudian expression and unrestrained creativity. Released originally on the 21st of August, 2003, Christian & The Hedgehog Boys was one of the first underground internet albums of our times. Since it’s original release, it has only gained in popularity.

The album begins with the toe-tapping So Need a Cute Girl, which is simply Chan singing relentlessly over I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys, with the inclusion of his own lyrics such as “I never want to hear you say I have a boyfriend” and “I don’t want a girl my age.” Feel So Lonesome also contains some of his best lyrics, such as “I want a girlfriend, [inaudible] but I have no balls.” The range on Christian & The Hedgehog Boys is impeccable. BFF's (Best Friends Forever) is this generation’s It's All Coming Back To Me. The elegy is fueled by Chan’s wonderful range and heartbreaking delivery. The song is immediately followed by La Cocina En La Casa De Casanova!, (La Cocina En La Casa De Casanova!), a powerful fusion of Latin-dance music and extravagant tropipop. Unfortunately, Chan cuts the songs short, as is the case with Yellow is a Mellow Color. Suffice to say, the album’s main flaw is its disappointing length.

It’s a shame Christian & The Hedgehog Boys doesn’t come with a lyrical book, though half the fun is deciphering what he’s saying throughout the record. Time has been kind to the album; it’s aged like fine wine. Controversy after controversy, Chan has managed to withstand the storm like Kanye to press, due to the strong support he garnished on Christian & The Hedgehog Boys. It’s a shame Chan never returned to the format following his original releases, though at least his small catalogue remained consistently high in quality.

On July 30, 2021, it was revealed that Chan was fucking his mother.
