Selfish Dream / Was Constant – At Every Sunset

At Every Sunset is a split album featuring music from Selfish Dream and Was Constant. Released on February 5th, 2021, the album featured a nice combination of two styles, which hardly differed from on another.

Selfish Dream’s side is clearly the standout. Your Opinion and My Opinion and Their Opinion may be the artist’s best work to date. The contrasting sounds are complex, yet somehow beautifully mesh together. The song sadly ends abruptly, as does Turn Those Flurosent Lights On. Keep the Living Good Life is also a genuine surprise; beyond the already-explored reverse guitars is a gorgeous palate of synthetics place stunningly over a vibrant, distinct soundscape. Sadly, like other Selfish Dream songs, it fizzles away uneventfully. The rest is mostly fluff, as is the majority of Was Constant’s side. Instead of exploring an interesting combination of sounds and composing them in a meaningful manner, the artist instead choses to display sounds in isolation, as if no one had heard them before. The exception is Nightingale Reversion, which is stunning in contrast to the surrounding songs. This is perhaps because it features a divine free-form guitar, as opposed to mindless combinations of pads.

Had the album been comprised of the standout songs mentioned in this review, it may have scored quite highly. Had it been comprised of the remaining songs; it would have scored terrible. Despite the average rating, I still recommend listening to the standouts. Sadly, the lesser songs are insulting; artists have been exploring these sounds for decades, and the majority of these combinations offer nothing new to the canon of ambient art. If only the artists took their best songs from each release and focused on releasing one solid album per year instead of regurgitating the same fluff month to month.
