Digighouls - Underworld Swag
Following the surprisingly above-average album Nocturne, Digighouls unfortunately returned to their bit-crushed aesthetic for the unpleasant Underworld Swag – an amalgamation of Digighouls’ worst ideas compiled into a lazy output, overflowing with repeated ideas and underbaked songs.
The album is overflowing with duds. Underworld Intro opens the album with overly processed and distorted vocals, which ruin an otherwise fine, transported soundscape. Digighouls produce perhaps their worst song ever, New Heart, which is the epitome of awful. I Hate Sleepy Ice echoes the sentiments of the shill community, without any self-awareness. Lightskin contains some of the worst lyrics Digighouls have ever done – this is taking into consideration they made a concept album about vampires having a rave party. Sample use is obnoxious and boring on No Me, as are all the Minecraft samples on Zombie. Furthermore, Futanari contains lame car sounds, as does Mibreak – both completely uninspired. The topics of lyricism are as shallow as the genres present. In line with the shallow poetry is Sleepy’s insufferable delivery, in which he sounds excessively stoned on tracks such as Bullet for my Valentine, as well as inept and lazy on Swag Outro. Lotion may be the only standout song, but it’s a song about masturbation and it’s 57 seconds long… One shouldn’t go out of their way to listen to it, even if somehow you’re a fan.
It’s no wonder the group disbanded after their last project; like all fads with no substance, it naturally fell apart with time because a fresh lick of paint can only go so far. What’s left of Digighouls is the empty, soulless project of Sleepy Ice, who is far too concerned with lyrically replicating materialism, rather than pushing the boundaries of what frequency-modified crushed-trap aesthetics may have to offer. One can only hope this is not Digighouls last project, however, as their focus on inspiration was admirable. It’s a shame they were not as innovative as they thought they were, though.
