w u s o 命 is an experimental dreampunk producer from Canada. Released via Dream Catelogue on February 19, 2021
Of all the recent dreampunk records on the scene, Painted With Voices is undeniably one of the finest. The scene may be consistently expanding, though it’s increasingly becoming less relevant. The genre is unfortunately limiting, though; w u s o 命 only stands out due to his skill, but not his uniqueness. On the notepad, he soars heavily in production and enjoyability, though faulters heavily in the innovation department. Despite this main criticism, the album gets pretty much everything right.
Even when the album relies on conventional tropes, such as the dance number toward the end of Euphoria, it works quite well. This is because the album is oozing with style and is immaculately executed. The production is as fine as silk, and the cloudy aesthetic is consistently dreamy. The progressive elements are also quite admirable; the album glides through the mid-portion and climaxes marvellously on its title track Painted with Voices. The way w u s o 命 introduces various elements, such as the iridescent chimes or the sparkly arps, is very pleasant. More impressive is how the album executes its heavier sections, such as Escape From The Hit. w u s o 命‘s dynamic range breathes a lot of life into the album. Another element that makes the album fresh is its incorporation of field recordings. While the sample use is often fairly simple, the beautiful progression of bass paired with the admirable use of space, is mesmerising. The opening two tracks in particular do it very well.
Despite its glaring flaw, Painted with Voices is a very sold release. w u s o 命 will need to do a lot more in future, however, to win over music fans that aren’t tied to one music scene. If the artist can find some way to expand upon the genre, or fuse it with another, he’s bound to make it big. Here’s hoping he takes more risks on his next project.
