Tyler Cichy – More

Tyler Cichy, previously known as Half-Baked Human, has been releasing new material under a different name, presumably due to a change in styles. Though unlike Fake, More sounds very similar to his old catalogue. Moreover, it greatly improves upon it.

Barge In features a neat, accompanying midi-orchestra, though its execution is quite bland. In all honesty, it’s worth skipping the opening track. Deem is much better, most due to its fantastic progression. The rampart, high-pitch frequencies that soars throughout the second half is very cool; if only the beats were more inspired. Cichy does a good job at switching up the beats by incorporating moments of reverse-sounding drums, but the remaining jobs can’t help sound copy pasted. Blackbox expands upon this concept even further; the result is fascinating. While Quesy is underwhelming compared to the preceeding tracks, Arena satisfies due to its bold mixing. Cichy’s choices are odd but pay off; the end result is memorable.

As mentioned in my review of Fake, it’d be a shame for Cichy to completely disregard his musical journey until this point for a more over-saturated genre. Whereas Fake sounded underbaked, More is surprisingly quite fulfilling for such a small EP. It does a commendable job at differentiating itself from other breakcore acts, though the artist still has a lot of room left to develop a unique sound. Nonetheless, the soundscapes are some of the artist’s best work to date, and are well worth your time.
