El Cairo de Montevideo - Somos

El Cairo de Montevideo are a DIY indie garage band from Montevideo, Uruguay. Incorporating elements of post-hardcore and blues, the band went little out of their way to produce something unique, yet exceeded exceptionally well at their goal. Released on March 31st, 2021; Somos mostly surpassed other indie rock acts in the mixing/mastering component, yet little elsewhere.

While plain at first, El portón dynamic progression keeps it fresh. It soon transitions into a jammy blues-rock suite. No te demores boasts an exceptional vocal performance amidst a non-stop, energetic jam. The outro is spectacular. Espiritual’s progression and instrumentation is divine. Both incredibly well thought-out and impeccably executed, the song comes with an extremely high recommendation despite the album’s overall ranking. Outside of Caca De Perro’s climatic instrumentation, it sounds too much like music you’d hear in an everyday-man’s bar. The Doors influences is most prevalent on Alicia, highlighting the album’s major flaw; it often sounds like a South American knock-off of 60’s rock. Despite its impeccable production and exsquisite vocalist, it barely raises the bar.

While there’s nothing bad about El Cairo de Montevideo’s Somos, one should simply expect more from bands in the 20’s. The compositions are excellent; they simply need a fresh lick of paint. The band could simply incorporate some fresh synthetics or add a new instrument or two, and they’d easily stand out. The skills are undeniably strong, they’re just predictable. Give them your support in the short term but expect more from them in future.
