Mollywhollop – Mathrock EP

Mollywhollop is an indie math rock project crafted by a man named Ian in California. His music is phenomenal and masterfully crafted.

His math rock EP opens with Filth & Splendour; a fantastically-vibey track. The drums are so finely tuned and methodically played. The guitars ravish eternal bliss and and their progression is as natural as math rock comes. Velvet Orange is a stunning centrepiece filled to the brim with beautifully mastered hi-hats, sexy toms and engaging guitars. The climatic finale is perfectly executed and has a fascinating build-up. The subtle use of feedback is utilised very well and is something I suggest Ian focus on more. You Are Here is a lovely finish to the album; the use of synths are subtle yet gorgeous, and the instrumentation is as precise as ever.

My rating may come as a shock to most people, though is signifies room for improvement. Mollywhollop is perhaps one of the most skilled musicians I have ever come across, though his music has been done before much too often. It’s missing the personality that bands such as Don Caballero have mastered. At times it’s a little too clean; while it certainly makes his skills shine, it lacks character. The compositions are incredibly well calculated, though; so, this is purely to the artists’ aesthetic point. Perhaps this is why I favour his collaboration with Goodnight Moon – the additionally cruisy instrumentations add a much-needed flair.

Though I always find myself returning to the EP. It’s easy to listen to and boasts impressive vibes. It’s good stuff, and I hope Ian takes these words on board to unlock his full potential.
