edodisco - Young Goth Euphoria Complex

Young Goth Euphoria Complex by edodisco was released on September 27th, 2020. While consistently as warm and inviting as its cover, the contents were dull and uninspired.

紫の光 is an ethereal, but boring and repetitive opener. (ナチュラル_デジタル) tries to spice its boring fluttering soundscapes with lame insertion of samples from Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, to no positive effect. ネオセロトニン / ネオコメディ is repetitive shopping-centre music, saved by a chaotic, abrasive climax. “INTERNET FANTASY FOREVER” incorporates bit-crushed trap in the most unimaginative way imaginable. 実現, one of the longest songs on the album, only works due to the strengths of the songs it samples. It blends them seamlessly into a lively, yet overlong track. Unlike the remaining track listing, it’s thoroughly enjoyable, and well worth a listen. The following track, 崩壊 (黒地に白), is almost equally as impressive, but it’s far too long without enough ideas to warrant its length.

Young Goth Euphoria Complex‘s main complex is it’s pure vapourwave. There’s no unique sample or innovative infusion to differentiate it from the overwhelming majority of tripe repping the genre. Its most annoying cliché is its inclination to use katakana for song titles. The vapourwave genre has become a joke, and a sad stain in music culture. It’s a shame the underground scene is overflowing with similar albums; at least live recordings have some skill associated with them. Outside the noteworthy production, edodisco’s latest   has nothing of value to offer; perhaps with the exception of 実現.
