Effigy – Oneironaut

Effigy, a band from London, UK, released Oneironaut on June 3, 2022. The EP was short, and despite lacking innovation, contained some very enjoyable pieces.

Space Frieghter leans heavily into its fuzz and space-rock sounds. Due to the bass heavy soundscapes, the drums sit miraculously in the mix; completely leading the harmony for the most part. Outer Sphere is rather boring in contrast, focusing more on replicating Kyuss than exploring new sonic territories. Along with the opener, one can’t help but imagining these songs having a greater impact if they were longer and more adventurous with their sound design in line with the psychedelic space rock elements. Lastly, the title track and closer, Oneironaut, is a huge standout. The song is a mix of Earth’s heavy drone elements and Duster’s lackadaisical songwriting. The result is relaxing and mesmerising.

Oneironaut boasts a respectable performance throughout its short run time, though its instrumentals leave something to be desired.  Moreover, while the density of noise paired with the excessive use of bass is very enticing, it’s been done many times before. Suffice to say, the EP would have had a far greater impact in the 90’s. If Effigy can find that missing element to make them standout, they’ll easily soar.
