Blaine Mason – Skatterbrain

Blain Mason is a techno producer from Nashville, Tennessee. He released the below-average Skatterbrain on October 2, 2020.

The album opens with Head Trauma. The shifting, reverse sounds are effective at luring the listener in within the opening bar, though the song insists on repeating a sharp vocal snip for the majority of the track, which adds nothing of value to the generic techno beats. Fortunately, there’s quite an extensive amount of progression within the track. The techno elements change track seamlessly and quite vividly; it’s a shame there’s hardly anything memorable outside the beats. Sadly, the producer throws everything that made his opening track special out the window with Spazm; a track that’s just as boring as it is uninspired. The closer, The Downward Spiral, is equally as forgettable.

Blaine Mason is undeniably a solid producer and composer, though he’s greatly limited by the constraints of techno. The greatest modern techno work will easily be outshined by an above average EDM album. If Mason can intertwine, blend or fuse another notable genre into his works in a profound manner, there’s a good chance he’ll make more waves. As for now, due to the limitations of the genre, he’s incontrovertibly confined underground.
