Trash3300 - the liminal space between having and desire

Bad

Trash3300, an experimental noise pop producer from Auckland, New Zealand, released his debut album The Liminal Space Between Having and Desire on August 22nd, 2021. While the album cover is incredibly mesmerising; sadly, the same cannot be said for its contents.

The range throughout The Liminal Space Between Having and Desire is easily its greatest draw. The album harkens back to the glory plunderphonic days of Kiln, providing great contrast in dynamics between tracks. Though while the lo-fi alternative rock and noise rock sections are charming, the album completely relies on its aesthetics to carry it forward. There are exceptional standouts, of course. Sometime sonically sits between a Papa M suite and a Guided By Voices instrumental filler. The track however, like many others on The Liminal Space Between Having And Desire, sounds more like an abandoned idea than a fully-fledged, coherent track. Brokenscren is a cowboy-esque instrumental lullaby in line with Volebeat’s Solitude (Safe House, 1999). Unfortunately, the majority of the album is plagued by boring experiments, such as Pillars and Clockwork.

Had the artist put more time and effort into completing his pieces and refining them, The Liminal Space Between Having and Desire may have been an exceptional record. Where it lacks in originality, it makes up for in variety. There’s quite a lot throughout the record, and had they been properly refined and executed, they would have made a fascinating experience. Sadly, the end result is forgettable.
