Second Line – MUSUBI

Second line are a teenage duo from Oak Harbor, United States. Despite their young ages, Second Line are impressively talented.  If you’re a fan of short, punk-rock fueled EP’s, such as Joyce Manor’s debut/self-titled, Second Line’s debut MUSUBI might suffice.

Ran swaps between female and male vocals. Both vocalists are quite memorable, and suite the acoustics incredibly well. Needless to say, they are the greatest draw of the album, much like the two main singers of Slowdive in the 90’s. Mike demonstrates range, influenced mostly by raggae. Despite the tacky genre, it sounds impressively adept. Sarah, a continuation of Mike, continues the flow with a neat jam. It’s a wonder why the two songs were split, though. How Ya Doin' Darlin' interplays the vocalists until an explosive, satisfying finale.

It’s lacking originality, but it boasts a lot of personality. There are plenty of short, fantastic moments throughout MUSUBI to recommend it as is. If it were longer and as consistent in quality, it would have ranked higher. Second Line’s next output ought to be longer, further fleshed out, and with a greater focus on instrumental bridges. An impressive start, no less.
