Whateverend Rando - HMHSY Series
Whateverend Rando, from Bermuda, blur the lines between plunderphonics and industrial noise. As their Bandcamp description states, Whateverend Rando negates genres into submission. A fitting statement, as their LP “HMHSY Series” is to plunderphonics what William Basinski’s “Disintegration Loops” is to ambient.
The discordant neo-psychedelic plunderphonics present through “HMHSY Series” are marvellously delightful. Simultaneously jarring and iridescent, the production is consistently oozing with personality. The album begins with a vocal sample on (intro) and impeccably utilises it during the album’s convivial carnival-ride descent into madness. If only the album were longer; it’s clear everything was rushed, as most of the tracks are under-developed. Thankfully, it’s devoid of fluff and jammed-packed with ideas, such as during the brilliant eclectic post-sampling extravaganza of (inferno).
It’s incredible how much valuable music had been produced from such a small handful of samples. The album cannot help feel under-baked, though; luckily its uniqueness and top-notch aesthetic make up for its shortcomings. If Whateverend Rando continues to make more work in future, I advise he take his time and flesh it out; there’s certainly a demand for such creativity.
