Howling Of The Tectonic - Catharsis EP

Howling of the Tectonic is a solo artist from Thessaloniki, Greece. His debut, Catharsis EP, is disappointingly short and rather lacking in innovation, though its single, Army of Crows, comes with a strong recommendation.

Army of Crows is majestically and eerily delightful. This is My Design is the ultimate build up to the cryptic and ultimately fulfilling lower frequencies. The track trails the fine line between horror and euphoria. My Rules is, especially in comparison to the preceeding tracks, overly conventional. While the drums pound with much needed energy, the accompanying synthetics add nothing new to the already-explored spectrum. Crossed features one desirable buildup and offers a gorgeous palette of sounds, though its much too short to take seriously. Stalker is baron of fresh ideas. Cut to the Bone features some razor-sharp guitar work and well suited synthetics, though the short length of the track is reflective of Howling’s greatest flaw; he doesn’t quite know how to progress the tracks. Most tracks have an idea on repeat, without a sense of progression, and very little climax when suitable. The album whimpers off with Catharsis, a boring attempt at an ambient track.

There’s some strong writing prevalent in the front half of Catharsis EP, though it tends to rely far too heavily on its style, without offering anything of substance. Had the album been fleshed out further with stronger progressions, the style would have certainly carried it higher to a greater recommendation; unfortunately, it’s much too short (as are each of the 1-2 minute tracks). Here’s hoping Howling Of the Tectonic will utilise his incredible production skills for something a little more satiating next time.
