Gremlems – Gremlems from Outer Space

There’s been a noticeable increase in non-sensical joke albums in the underground scene over the past 18 months, most likely due to the fact kids are skipping school and are growing tired of Fortnight. In its defence, Gremlens From Outer Space takes less inspiration from the trash emo-rap scene, and instead fumbles around through space noise rock territory.

The greatest quality of Gremlems work is its lose sound structure. At times, its cathartic, monstrous sound is entirely absorbing; such is the case during Mr Sinister. Fragmented beats are merely distorted notes during the troubled, muddy soundscapes. The palatte is irristable, albeit atrociously (and perhaps intentionally) mastered. The fuckery of synths through Message Through Space are also quite fulfilling, etched together with streams of phrenzy. Tracks like Rallizies and Lay My Own Soul Down show a beautiful ambient side of the artist. Dreemeyn unequivocally slays its magical, franic soundscape. Suffice to say, there are plenty of cool moments; especially when the album intersects its sample-use with electronic guitars. The result is magical.

Where it truly bombs is in its run-time; many of the ideas are unnecessarily stretched out with little progression. Dirt Far Backie, like many other tracks, is one trick pony. The soundscapes are consistently captivating throughout A Plan For You, but why was the obnoxious sample repeated through its runtime? Very often the textures are the only saving grace. Satan is da evilest man’s sample use can barely keep the song together. Betelgeuse Jr, seemingly inspired by Dinosaur Jr, rocks the flair but faulters in its repetitive and plain composition. The band are reminescent of Ween: the amalgamation of these themes are great, though they’re nothing new or special.

The album has its lesser moments, for sure; it is an amateur triple-disc release afterall. Most of these circumstances are a result of a valuable idea being repeated to unnecessary lengths, such as Chime and Rotten Son of a Bitch Dub. Most surprising, is how good some of it is. It lacks refinement; something the band truly ought to focus on. With more time between their releases, their next one is sure to hit harder.
