Fog - Fog

Fog, previously known as Literally Who?, recently changed their artist name, presumably because their previous artist name was already in use. His self-titled album’s contents feel distinct enough from Basking in It, while also sounding like a natural progression. Sadly, unlike his superb debut, his follow-up was underbaked.

Lord Please Help Me’s Tribal drums hardly progresses the track, though acts more as a motif; the sinister, eerie strings are the true glue that stitches segments together. As the beat starts to ramp, the song disappointedly ends. Simp Like A Newborn Deer harkens Pharmakon in a somehow iridescent, yet menacing conjuncture of baleful fragments comprised of conspiracy, reality and otherwise dubious slices of life. Lycurgus Cup is a filler experimental track. While it boasts an enticing sound design, its composition is benign and predictable. Life in a jar’s sound design is brilliant, as is the attention to detail in the production compartment. The utilisation of samples is quite plain, though. The first half of the track barely builds any tension/suspense, whereas the second half cuts in out of nowhere and sounds like a completely different idea tacked on. The final bonus track, Fog, is built around a personal sample that, while prolific to the artist, is non-memorable to the audience. A Charles Manson sample may have been more fitting.

Fog clearly has delved into dark places to scavenge for the loose fragments of Fog, though the output seems rushed and undeveloped, especially compared to his debut. Despite being half the former album’s length, it sounds like one quarter of the ideas. Here’s hoping he spends more time developing his next release.
