Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack - Trouble Sleeping?

Early Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack’s discography is a mixed bag, though Trouble Sleeping? Is a pleasant surprise. Released September 15th, 2012, the album was a sleeping hit.

The stylistic opener Hardlines Out opens the album well, with its jaunt idm and fuzzy krautrock elements. Other Sun is unlike any other song Tim has done; it channels 2000’s pop songwriting with a summer vibe reminiscent of Phoenix. The simple idm-chillwave of Eraenwes is fairly enjoyable, though wafts about in its composition aimlessly. The same could be said for the closer, Thescape/1st Sun; plenty of good ideas, though a tad bit too long. 2nd Sun/Stationary Sun does it so much better; the drawn-out samples of fuzz give extendable texture to the otherwise bubble-gum beats. Acoustic elements become more prominent on the title track, Trouble Sleeping?; a track that stands out as a result. Guts of the World starts off rather standard, though detours into a glitchy, fuzzy soundscape that’s both gritty and enjoyably summery. At its best, the album is gorgeous, at its worst average.

Despite sounding rather repetitive, Trouble Sleeping? Stands among WGWGSA’s best work. It’s well composed and admirably cheeky. The production is both vibrant, yet well balanced. Most importantly, it’s the turning point in WGWGSA’s career, in which he found his own unique sound. While it’s not as consistent as future releases, it benefits from some really notable highs.
