Bad

Liquid Grey Ice are an experimental krautrock band from College Park, Maryland. Whereas before they fused ambience with progressive rock into their suites, their latest album offered nothing but air. Released May 22nd, 2022, the EP was a massive test of patience.

The first few tracks all sound like a cross between film scores and ambient intermissions on doom-metal albums. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though the compositions themselves sound underdeveloped and underbaked. Case in point is Remember?; the song builds up via a delightful assortment of nylon strings and chanting, only to end abruptly. The album declines heavily in quality following these tracks. Half a Pyramid from Mars is frustrating. The song stutters as if your listening equipment was faulty and offers nothing but lame ambient pads. Breathed is even worse, extending this notion for an obnoxious 9 minutes straight. Half the track is silence. While there are some interesting synths during Exi, it’s too little, too late. They can’t save the obnoxious previous tracks.

One can’t help but think that this was a massive attempt at trolling their fanbase, à la Wagon Lord. Unfortunately, there’s no humour to pair, and the ideas seem genuine. A shame, as the compositions themselves are far from spectacular, and greatly vary in quality. A large misstep in Liquid Grey Ice’s discography.
