Rokhe – Daedalus Variations

Rokhe is a solo artist from Rome, Italy. Focusing less on vocal performances, the artist’s latest EP is an inventive step in the right direction for the classical performer.

Variation 1 is a sweet and divine opening to the album. The timbre of instrumentations adds incredible flair to the warm, accompanying pianos. While it may not be wholly original, it’s deeply absorbing. The unification of acoustics and electronica is what make Variations 2 truly standout. Blending the realms of classical and rock seamlessly, the song effortlessly merges the two together. Despite the final variation ending the album rather emotionally, its composition is austere in comparison. Perhaps because it follows the inventive second suite, it sounds ordinary in comparison.

Rokhe’s Daedalus Variations explores some fantastic ideas and executes them marvelously. Unfortunately, it’s too short, and towards the end rather conventional. Nonetheless, a longer album of this quality would have easily scored higher. If Rokhe were to focus on the stronger elements in future, there’s little doubt he/she would not only win over the classical scene, but the rock and electronica scene as well. As it stands, his/her first two pieces are gorgeous, and worth a listen alone. Check it out below.
