DiGiGHOULS – My Demon Crush

DiGiGHOULS, composed of many different internet rappers, is a group that prides itself as the pioneers of crushed trap. What defines this genre is debatable, though DiGiGHOULS claim that crushed trap differs from trap due to its squashed bitrate.

Imma Need begins the album in a relatively boring fashion. The samples are fun and varied but cannot redeem the bland composition and awful vocals. The trend continues through Cutie; while a much better song overall, fails to spark any sensations. GhoulParty is somewhat interesting to dissect, though the vocals are horrendously mixed and the layers are nauseating to decipher. The song Starship is a chore to get through. Mumble rap has never felt so restrained by such a weak production. The album peaks with Jump Around!, a somewhat cruisy track to end with, restrained entirely by its weak vocals. The album can perfectly be summed up with the feelings evoked via Baked, featuring some relatively interesting production. The playful blend of vocals perfectly encapsulates what the artists were intending to produce with this song – carefree dissonance. Perhaps if the artists took their craft more seriously, they’d produce more than a half-baked album.

It’s dishonest to say DiGiGHOULS have created a new genre here; this is simply a marketing gimmick. It’s an excuse for the overly poor phone-quality recorded vocals and dismissible production. It’s not without its charm, however; and the framework is capable of delivering something interesting and unique. Sadly, the album cannot rely on its aesthetic and there is very little substance.

It always saddens me to rip into fellow artists on /mu/, so here is a track I like by the artist:
